The Bacon Buttie Family

IN 2002 MIKE, THE BUTCHER, HEARD TALK ABOUT A LOCAL FARMERS MARKET STARTING IN DUNEDIN AND THOUGHT, "WHAT A GREAT WAY TO SELL MY BACON!"

THREW SOME GAS HOBBS, A FRYING PAN AND A FLIMSY GAZEBO IN THE BACK OF THE UTE AND THE BACON BUTTIE, MADE ITS DEBUT!

It didn't take long before word spread and people were lining up by the droves for their value for money Saturday bacon buttie.

Due to the popular demand for these tasty morsels, the gazebo was traded in for a customised food truck, before the food truck was retired.

You can now always find us in our store! At the bacon buttie station, what you see is what you eat!

Mike aka the Bacon Buttie man began carving meat, under his father’s guidance, at the tender age of 17. Inspired by his Dutch heritage Mike began to dabble in specialist products, which included bacon, and for the last 28 years he has been curing it the traditional way from his butcher shop in Halfway Bush. He bones, cures, smokes, slices and packs. His guarantee is 100% quality and 100% meat.

Glenda (Mikes wife/Tia’s mum) as the saying goes “behind every successful man, is a great woman” this couple is no exception. You can be sure to find her at the butcher shop cleaning, preparing and organizing. Although she prefers to stay in the background her role is vital to keeping the business running and their recipes secret.
